Class analysis of
“DEAD ON ARRIVAL”
How is narrative
told?
Pictures illustrate the story
Page turning device to further the story
speech bubbles tell the majority of the story
text captions written in the 1st person
music choice eg. Opening music was suspenseful, music pace
picked up as story unfolded, on the
hangover scene the music “jangly”
“easter egg” clickable items gave information to move the
narrative forward for example coffee cup, the phone, the office files.
Zooms on important items, e.g. the insurance documents to
draw the viewer’s attention
“Spiked” drink
The variety of devices to tell the story and the amount of
interactivity held the viewer’s attention well and made the storyline very
clear. There wasn't much animation as such, but the “shaking” animation on the
hangover scene helped to contribute to the atmosphere.
User enjoyment
through interactivity:
Searching for and finding clickable items
These items popped up which drew attention
A character/text captioning gave hints to what was clickable
The interactive pans were not very exciting.
The potential of
digital media:
All the above points illustrating the use of interactivity,
the use of sound and the fact that the user could guess who the murderer was
show what potential digital media has to enhance user enjoyment. These features
could not be included in a traditional comic book.
we did this as a class to understand how to research and analyse different forms of interactive stories and comics
Hotel
How is the narrative told
Hotel is told by animations with Easter eggs and buttons to be able to find out what happens next
it had also used text captions to indicate what is happening
it uses music to distinguish the sort of atmosphere
the sounds used to match what Easter egg need to be found for example a phone rings you have to locate the phone to continue
the choice in music was effective because it was all some thing that you would here in a actual hotel
besides sounds to locate items it has a small ring around what you need to find
it was mainly animation i couldn't really tell what other devices there was to tell the story
besides sounds to locate items it has a small ring around what you need to find

User enjoyment through interactivity:
searching for click able items
text captions to show what is happening or going on
there was transactions between scenes.
the potential of digital media
from this i have found out that interactive comics sometimes can be more effective by the way that the actions you do may change the overall ending that a printed comic cant

Megamind the interactive comic
How is the narrative told
it tell the story similar to more classic comic however it gets the reader more interested by including techniques such as zooming in to make the action in the panel more exiting to read. it wont change page until you click the arrow to change page it doesn't include any Easter eggs but it got the reader more involved with pans and zooms around the page (you could zoom and scroll where the action is taking place on panel).
user enjoyment through interactivity
change page when clicked
text captions to show what is being said and sounds e.g BOOOMMM to show and explosion
the was zooms that made i more exciting because when it zoomed it dashed to what happened next
the potential of digital media
from reading Megamind i found that zooms can make a comic more interesting by the way how
it makes you see just that section of what is going on where most people will naturally skim over it so they don't get as involved as the can be which cant be done in traditional comics unless they use a full page for 1 panel
Dracula
how is the narrative told
it tells the story by a scroll system so when you move your mouse the page will move in that direction at the end of each chapter it will give a option the the reader e.g to fight Dracula or run however the results don't really change by this i mean the option you choose will not
effect the outcome of the story massively for example t the beginning you choose weather you go into the house or not and either way you end up in the prison it also tell the story by using text captions and an Easter egg with a pan
user enjoyment through interactivity
to be able to hover to the next panel
to be able to search for Easter eggs
text captions to show what is happening
small animations
the potential of digital media
from reading Dracula I have found that that giving the reader a option will keep interest of the reader it shows each action in small sections as well as animations.to help the reader understand the actions taking place

Task 1 - you have not selected examples of INTERACTIVE STORIES. Please re-do this section referring to the example answer for Dead on Arrival that we did as a class exercise. Include D on A and add 5 other examples
